After relaxing under the palm trees on Tulum beach, we headed back to Playa del Carmen. Mainly because Playa is probably the best starting point to discover the inner part of the Yucatan Peninsula (we booked a full-day trip to one of the new 7 wonders of the world – Chichen Itza), do some more shopping and enjoy the city vibe. This time we stayed at the Hotel La Semilla, a stunning Rough-Luxe boutique hotel with a superb location.
Location: right next to hustle and bustle, while far enough to relax
Hotel La Semilla is located in the close proximity of the 5h Avenue, the main street (where everything happens) in Playa del Carmen. Its small property is located in Calle 38, a short walk away from all the hustle and bustle and not far from the sandy beach. You’ve got everything you need in the distance of a few steps, you can grab a hotel beach kit and head over to the Caribbean sea or explore the area by bicycle or foot.
Style: Rough-Luxe decor with the attention to detail
Rough-Luxe movement, some may call it “shabby chic”, is the latest trend for boutique hotels focusing on mixing different styles and uniqueness, including vintage flea market pieces. Attention to details in all of the 9 rooms at the Hotel La Semilla is just everything! Each piece tells its own story, mixing retro designs and antiques with a modern approach. That’s why Hotel La Semilla is the perfect choice for anyone looking for a unique stay. Even though my place in Slovenia looks anything but similar to Hotel La Semilla, It felt like home. We were warmly welcomed by their staff and had a lovely chat with the hotel owner Alexis Schärer. His story definitely left us inspired. He came from Europe, met his Mexican wife while living in New York and together they passionately decided to take a chance by starting their own vision of dream hotel (besides managing, he does a lot of the work on the hotel by himself, while she has the eye for décor; they are indeed a perfect duo). The La Semilla name will soon grow in a new project, the Villa La Semilla, located near Tulum. I am sure this one will be as spectacular as the one we visited. Hopefully, I will be able to enjoy it some day.
Favourite spots: the tree garden and the terrace
As I previously mentioned, every room at Hotel La Semilla has its own vibe and story. My favourite for sure are the tree garden and terrace areas, both different and relaxing at the same time. Having a delicious home-made organic breakfast in the middle of green forest was definitely the highlight of the 3 days we stayed at Hotel La Semilla. Their open-kitchen breakfast area was filled with a cool, laid-back bohemian atmosphere,… all of my senses were utterly pampered! The terrace right above the kitchen has a hammock, where you can chill and sip a glass of great wine (on the house!), while in the evenings you can take a glass on the rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the starry skies.
What a charming hotel! I love your description of it. The photos are so beautiful and I adore the rustic touches! The food and location sound great. Something to keep in mind when I visit!

Lepo. Je zelena tudi tam tako zelena kot v Indoneziji? 😉
Velik del tega predela dejansko predstavlja džungla. Vse je zeleno, edino obala je bela in morje turkizno 🙂
Prva fotografija je čista perfekcija. < Kar čutim mir, spokoj in kako ste si v takšni atmosferi napolnile baterije.
Your incredible pictures have just made me SO excited 🙂 I’m staying here for a few nights as part of my honeymoon next month and you’ve captured it perfectly, gorgeous images!
